When to schedule Maternity photos

The clock is a ticking and the baby is kicking! A frequently asked question from many of my expecting moms is, “when should I schedule my maternity session?

A general timeframe for scheduling your maternity session is within the third trimester of your pregnancy, 30-35 weeks. As we all know, not each pregnancy is the same, so there are no exact rules against scheduling your session outside of this time.

Some moms even schedule their sessions outside of this timeframe for a few reasons:

High-risk Pregnancy

If your pregnancy is high-risk but documenting this moment is important to you, you might want to considering having this moment documented earlier than the 30-35 weeks. This is helpful to my high-risk moms, some are concerned about causing stress to their body later in the pregnancy.

During the session when I’m creating portraits I’m sensitive to every client’s need(s) but especially to our expecting moms, so during the session I will keep an eye on your energy levels and often check in with you to offer a break as some sessions involve walking, stairs and standing.

Scheduling Conflicts

You and your family might have scheduling conflicts during the suggested 30-35 weeks of pregnancy that could possibly hinder documenting this special moment in your life, we then suggest scheduling your session earlier.

Some moms are concerned about scheduling their session TOO early. Just relax, there is no pressure! Proper usage of lighting, angles and styling helps to draw appropriate attention to your belly. So, while your belly isn’t poppin’ as you would ideally like, you will still get the desired photos of your dreams.

Growing Little one

You may find that your little one is growing faster than expected and decide to adjust your session date earlier than expected, it’s ok! Every pregnancy is unique and there are no absolute rules.

At the end of the day, your maternity session is an artistic experience that should be enjoyed by you and your loved ones.
