Sunrise at Baltimore Harbor- Captivating Waterside Engagement Session
There’s something about being by the water which is so organically romantic. Is it the way the sun’s light dances upon its waves, or the pastel colors of the sky it reflects? Perhaps it’s the element’s life-giving symbolism. Whichever way you see it, water is a blessing. It is transformative, yet pure. It represents renewal and rebirth - the basis of which everything around us is created.
It is only when we realize the symbolic traits water shares with love that we understand why it makes the perfect backdrop for an engagement session. I was thrilled when I learned that Baltimore Harbor was Bria and Arnold’s ideal location for their engagement session. Their love story, captured through the lens, embodies some of the most intrinsically romantic themes I’ve ever had the joy of photographing!
Here’s what I loved the most.
The Most Glorious Sunrise
We got up before the crack of dawn to make sure we caught the sunrise coming over Fell’s point - Baltimore’s iconic waterfront neighborhood. The famed ‘golden hour’ is the prime time to shoot for good reason. The low-lying sun illuminates the skin, eyes and smile, channeling effortless radiance and ethereal beauty. With a little help from some of the sun’s best rays, we were able to bring the pair’s wonderful personalities to life through the lens. Just look at those smiles!
The Dreamy, Pastel-Kissed Waterfront
What I love most about photographing at dusk or dawn is the ever-evolving color palette that ensues. The Baltimore Harbor, aka Fell’s Point, was lit up by the breathtakingly romantic pastels of the sunrise, creating the most amazing background for the session. In these photographs, we see the water take on a gradient of spectacular color, from midnight blues to shades of delicate lilac and pastel peach. Like a watercolor painting, only in the flesh.
Pure and Simple Symbolism
Everything about this session seemed to have its own magnificent, yet unassuming, symbolism. A new day represents a new beginning of course, and this couple marked the start of something special as dawn broke over Baltimore Harbor.
What made this session even more authentically special was knowing how much the location meant to Bria and Arnold. It’s their favorite place to dine out and spend time with each other. You can feel the realness radiate from these photographs. They’re reliving the joy of their early dates, and are embracing the excitement of spending the rest of their lives together.
For me, capturing genuine moments like this is what engagement and wedding photography is all about. I felt that this simple session really struck the perfect balance between urban character and elemental beauty, all while conveying so much romance.
It stands witness to the fact that you don’t need to go all out with details to find hidden meanings - the emblematic beauty of nature and love is so powerful on its own.
